The Jivenaires Showband was formed in Boyle, Co Roscommon (Ireland) in 1961. Having achieved significant local success the band progressed to the countrywide ballroom circuit, doing tours of the Irish Club and Dancehall scene in the UK during Lent, when no dancing was allowed throughout the bulk of the country. Although always based in Boyle the Jivenaires had a four-strong Mullingar presence at one stage.

Considered to be a very exciting band for its time with some excellent musicians, the band broke up in late 1967 when some band members turned professional and joined the bigger bands. Three of the band members still play the pub circuit - Sean Kenny, Monty (Frank) Montgomery, and Patrick Hoye (Boston USA).

The band had various changes in personnel throughout its short life. All of the following played at various times: Pat Feely (RIP), Evelyn O'Mara (Italy),Michael Kennedy, Pat Hever, Christy Regan, Andrew McKeon, Pat Hoye (Boston: USA),Frank Montgomery (Boyle), Rickey McCaffrey (Longford), Danny Murray (Dublin), Sean Kenny (Mullingar), Dermot Hegarty, (Longford), Gary Street (UK, RIP) and Liam Conroy (Dublin). The band was managed by Willie Devine (Dublin). The "sparks" was Tom Murray (Boyle). Groupees: now wouldn't ya all love ta know! ~D M Dec. 2001
